The Buchan Pipe Band was formed in Peterhead in May 1970 by an enthusiastic band of pipers and drummers from the Buchan area of Aberdeenshire under the patronage of Capt D W S Buchan of Auchmacoy and led by Pipe Major G Thom T.D. and Drum Major A Skinner. It was decided that the band would wear the Cumming tartan which is associated with the Buchan area.
In 1985 P.M.Thom retired and the role of Pipe Major was taken over by Robert Skinner who along with Scott Stephenson led the band into the competition field and with hard work, dedication and practice the band progressed through the grades with 1995/6 being the most rewarding period in the history of the band.
In 1995 in Grade 2 the band won the last two majors of the season and then in 1996 gained 1st place in all 5 majors which ensured promotion to the top of the competition scale - Grade 1. After 4 years and because of a fall of membership the band requested regrading to Grade 2. Since then the band has competed successfully at both local and major level.
In 2009 PM Robert Skinner decided to step down from the position and the role of Pipe Major has been taken over by Sinclair Lamb. Robert has stayed as a member of the pipe corp and has also taken on the responsibility of Band Chairman.
Since 1993 the band has sponsored the annual North of Scotland Champion of Champions contest at Aden Country Park Mintlaw which includes Drum Majors and Highland Dancing.
Tuition in piping and drumming is held in the Buchanhaven School Hope Street Peterhead every Thursday from 7 to 9pm for beginners in the 10 to 18 years age group.
