The Dornoch Pipe Band was formed in 1926 mainly through the efforts of a local man called William Skinner, who was at the time the Town Clerk of Dornoch.

The first Pipe Major was also a local man called William Grant, who was succeeded shortly afterwards by Hugh Grant who was also the personal piper to Andrew Carnegie at Skibo Castle from 1920 - 1957. In the early days the band wore Sutherland tartan kilts, Royal Stewart plaids, feather bonnets, with the drummers wearing white tunics and the pipers green tunics. This was the pipe band uniform of the 5th Seaforths, the Sutherland County Regiment. Nowadays the band dresses conventionally but still wears the Sutherland tartan kilt.

A regular feature of the band's activities is playing in Dornoch Square every Saturday night in the summer from the end of May until the middle of September at 8pm.

The present Pipe Major is Willie Fraser, who has served the band faithfully for over 40 years and has held this position for over 28 years.

In 1991 the band re-entered the competition field in Grade 4 and from the start were regularly in the prize list, so it was no surprise that in season 1993 they were Champion of Champions Grade 4 and were promoted to Grade 3. When this Grade was split they were placed in 3B, but on winning Champion of Champions of this grade they were moved up to Grade 3A where they currently lie.
