The Band is composed of service personnel from both RAF Kinloss and RAF Lossiemouth, as well as civilians from the local community. It is only since the late eighties that the Band has been competing, which has helped raise the overall standard of the Band. In 1995, the Kinloss P&D enjoyed their most successful season. A total of 38 trophies, including 30 first prizes, were won at both local and National competitions. These trophies include the Grade IV and Grade III Champions for the North of Scotland and the North of Scotland Champion of Champions; these placings were echoed by the drum corps in their section. At National level, they gained a fourth place in the British and a second place in the Scottish Championships in Grade IV. These results represented the best ever for an RAF pipe band at that time.
In addition to competing, the band attends the whole range of traditional Highland events as well as official functions and a number of charity events. They have a regular overseas commitment in Guernsey providing musical support for the RAFA Battle of Britain Wings Appeal.
With a constant turnover of personnel it is very difficult to maintain consistency within the Band. The civilian contingent, however, do help to alleviate this particular problem, to the extent that the Band would not be viable without them. The Drum corps has been a particularly strong asset and played a major part in the Band gaining their promotion to Grade III in 2001.
The Band receives some financial support through their sponsorship by Thales Defence Systems.
