In the July of 1919 a group of 14 veterans of the Great War - from the Gordons - clubbed together, and with the help of a 10 pound donation from Keith Town Council and a little over 40 pounds collected in the town, got themselves established as "Strathisla Pipe Band".

The two founding members of the new band were Pipe Major George McLaren and Piper James Garden. To help them with their deliberations over the organising of the band and the question of what it should be called, the two men opened a bottle of excellent Strathisla Malt - this was enough to inspire them to adopt its name as their own.
