Turriff Pipe Band was formed during 1923 made up of a nucleus of ex-servicemen returning from the trenches of the First World War. One of whom was Pipe Major George Findlater VC, who was Pipe Major from 1927 to 1940.
During the 1960’s the band was coached under the influence of Pipe Major Jas. Robertson (ex Gordon Highlanders and composer of the great 6/8 march “Farewell to the Creeks”)
From the 1940’s to the present day the Turriff Pipe Band has been led by three generations of the “Hepburn” family.
Presently Pipe Major Bill Hepburn Jnr holds the helm, together with Leading Drummer Harry Orlandi. Harry has served the band from an early age and remained a stalwart of the band.
The Band currently have a strong membership and practice in their own hall in Turriff, twice weekly. Youngsters taught on Monday evenings with Band practices Tuesday & Thursday evenings.
The Bands annual events take the form of local pipe band contests together with competing at the various major contests. They perform at various venues throughout the year amongst which is the famous Braemar Gathering in September.
Turriff Pipe Band was one of the first bands to promote pipe band competitions in the area. This competition is now in its 34th year. 2004 saw Turriff host the British Pipe Band Championships in which 110 bands took part. To date it is still held as one of the “Jewels” of the Championship venues. |
