Quartets Cancelled

22nd March 2013

Due to difficult weather conditions across the country the difficult decision has been taken to cancel the Quartets Piping event.

The Branch Management will look into whether the event can be run successfully at a date later in the season.


2012 Dates

The Branch is pleased to be associated with The Forres Theme Day Committee in promoting their first competition on Sunday 6th May. A healthy sponsorship arrangement allows for meaningful prize money to paid across all grades. The competition will be included in The Branch Champion of Champions award. It is expected that there will be a healthy turnout of Branch bands.

New band welcomed to NoS Branch

The NoS Branch extends a warm welcome to latest members, Ullapool & District Pipe Band. Led by P/M Andrew Shillday, the band from the North-West reaches of our branch have joined us over the Winter months.

This is a good time to remind all our bands that they can email the sectrary at any time with updates to their band info page.


Solo Piping and Drumming Championships Planned for Elgin

15th November 2010

The North of Scotland Solo Piping and Drumming Championships will be coming to Elgin next Saturday (20 November), for the first time in 30 years.

The competition, which is being supported by local firm Gordon & MacPhail, will see 164 pipers and drummers of all ages descend on Elgin High School for a day-long celebration of traditional Pipe Band music.
The North of Scotland Solo Piping and Drumming Championships are an annual event organised by the North of Scotland Branch of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association. Contestants come from across the Highlands to compete for prizes in 18 categories.

David Urquhart, Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, said:
“Hosting these championships is a real coup for Elgin. We’re delighted to be able to support this exciting event which will provide a welcome boost to tourism in the area, and a great day out for local music fans.”

Bill Barclay, Chairman of the North of Scotland Branch of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association said:
 “It’s terrific that we will be heading to Elgin for this important event on the annual piping and drumming calendar.  Elgin will be alive to the sound of pipes and drums and we encourage locals and visitors alike to witness some of the north of Scotland’s top traditional Scottish music talent.”

The championships will take place on 20 November 2010 from 0930. Spectators welcome.

Branch Bands Successful at Brechin Solos

19th September 2010

Members from a range of North of Scotland bands were successful in a competitive field at the City of Brechin Solo Piping & Drumming Competition, held on Saturday 18th September 2010 at Brechin High School.

Judges on the day were Tom Brown and Ian Duncan (Piping), Paul Brown (Snare) and Nial West (Tenor).

Fired Up!

3rd July 2010

“FIRED UP” will feature Bucksburn and District Pipe Band and Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band in an “end of season” concert on the 9th October 2010 at the Aberdeen Music Hall.

One of the greatest Pipe Band events to take place in the North East for over 20 years, hopes to attract a sell-out crowd with Boghall and Bathgate being the main attraction with performances from Bucksburn’s youth and senior Bands.

The whole idea of the concert is to heighten the interest and excitement within the North East Pipe Band world and to hopefully encourage youngsters to take up piping or drumming.
Tickets are priced at £15 each and are available to all North East Bands without incurring a ticket booking fee if ordered through Bucksburn Pipe Band. 

I ask you kindly to forward this information onto your fellow band members and supporters in the hope that we get your full support along with a healthy number of ticket sales.

Relay for Life 2010

11th January 2010

The next Relay for Life in Huntly will be staged on the 3rd and 4th July 2010. As part of a full 24 hours of family entertainment, the organisers would like to stage a massed pipe band session between 11.30 and 12.30 on Sunday 4th July 2010.

With the final North of Scotland Outdoor contest being held in showery weather at Mintlaw's Aden Country Park, the 2009 Champions of Champions Bands and Drum Majors have been crowned.

47th BB Centenery Tune Winner Announced

19th April 2009

There werea total of 6 entries from 5 different composers for the competition to compose a pipe tune to commemorate the centenery of the 47th Aberdeen (Culter) Boys Brigade. They were:

Paul Harrison - Dublin Ardross, by Alness
James Robertson - Kirkwall
Robert Grant - Peterculter
Andrew Clark - Logie Pert,by Montrose
William Hepburn Snr. - Turriff (2)

The judges for the competition were:

Stuart Reid - former Captain of the 47th and P/M of the Pipe Band
George Cowie - former Captain of the 47th and P/M of the Pipe Band, Centenry Committee Chairman
Mike Reid - present Captain of the 47th and P/M of the Pipe Band
Steve Insch - present P/M of the Culter & District Pipe Band and former P/M of the 47th band
Callum Lamont - current member of the 47th and Pipe Band.

After listening to all the tunes, not knowing which tune was written by whom, a vote was taken and the judging panel unanimously agreed on a tune. The tune was then revealed to have been written by Robert Grant of Peterculter.

Many thanks to all the entries for composing 6 very good unes, but unfortunately there had to be only 1 winner and congratulations go to Robert for his winning entry, a four parted 12/8 March.


Aberdeenshire P&D Taster - Inverurie

4th March 2009

The final youth pipe and drum workshop for this session is on Saturday 7th March 2009 at Inverurie Academy.

We've a good number booked in already, but there are some spaces for those who haven't managed to attend yet. If you wan to come along and don't have an application form, send an email to with a contact number and we'll book you in over the phone. You are most welcome to turn up on the day at 9.40am sharpand we'll get you signed up then also.

We all had a great morning at Stonehaven last weekend. So much in fact that many are keen to come again to the next workshop.
